Social Support in Accessing Medical Services – Perspectives for Strengthening Clients
A perspective on empowering clients as a key component of treatment adherence
Often, it seems to us that the most important thing is to get the client to the hospital, ensure they receive ART therapy, or arrange inpatient care. But that’s only part of it. An equally important part is making sure the client stays in treatment—or at least knows how to return. That they feel increasingly responsible for their own health. Sometimes, however, our help can have the opposite effect: we disempower the client and put them in a dependent, helpless position. We’ll discuss how social support can be designed to strengthen clients and give them more agency over their own lives within the context of healthcare.
